4 women, 4 men, changing the global face of CV basketball

Some talented young Caboverdeana-Americans and Caboverdeano-Americans are turning up in some rather unexpected places these days, places like Macau (China), Boston, Switzerland, and Portugal. And it is what they are doing in those places that, is gaining worldwide attention throughout the CV Diaspora, and beyond.

Shannon PerryOn several different levels of collegiate and professional basketball, including at the very pinnacle, CVs are becoming a force to be reckoned with. I’ve chosen 4 young women and 4 young men who each in their own ways represent this interesting development, and there certainly are more as well beyond the scope of this article but who nevertheless are also important and exciting to watch. And, there are most definitely more to come as talented young players develop, building on the earlier accomplishments of some listed here.

Ladies, first, (of course!)…Shannon Perry, whose maternal grandmother is Cape-Verdean, is only 1/8 CV, but she is absolutely 100 % stellar on the basketball court, where she starred for several years as a top scorer and rebounder on national powerhouse Syracuse University (Syracuse Orange basketball – need I say more?!), then later for Bryant University, last year, as she worked toward an MBA while playing a final year of eligibility that she had remaining due to a red-shirted injury year. Ms. Perry now suits up professionally in Switzerland, for Martigny Basket, one of only 2 Americans on the team, competing – excuse me, starring - in the highest level out of several Swiss pro leagues. Ms. Perry has been good for an impressive, team-leading 20 ppg. this season, leading Martigny Basket to a current 2nd place standing in the league. For anyone who watched her notch 19.6 ppg and 12.7 boards per game with Bryant last year, this is hardly a surprise. The sooner she slips on a CV jersey to compete for the National Team, the better!!
